Posted by Scott Kirsner Lots of fun lunching today with Nobel laureates Philip Sharp and Sir Richard Roberts, and conducting an on-stage interview with the two immediately afterward at the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council's annual meeting. The two were awarded Nobel Prizes in 1993, for work they did independently on RNA splicing. When I asked Sir Richard at lunch what we could do to spark more interest in science among young people, I was surprised by his answer: make it easier for them get their hands on fireworks. The pyromusical was designed and programmed by Rusty Johnson, our Victorian display manger, and it was the first time Rusty has designed and programmed a large scale pyromusical. It was also the first time he has designed and programmed a competition display so its a great achievement for Rusty on his debut. The spectacular 18 minute pyromusical was fired from a barge in Manilla and featured a great Australian music but also included a compulsory segment of Philippine music that all competitors were required to use in their displays. |

Great fireworks show "Taming of fire-2" will take place on May 15, 2010 in Dnepropetrovsk. 1-st similar fireworks display was held in Dnepropetrovsk by company "Sheriff" on October 4, 2009. Different from «Taming of fire-1», new show is devoted to history of fireworks in China, Europe, Russia and Ukraine. The best fragments of "Sheriff's" displays including Yalta fireworks festival, Christmas fireworks displays and ground pyromusical performances will be used in the show. In addition to the unique fireworks two fire-show theatres from Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkiv will take part in the show. 40 kW of sound and 30 kW of light, fire-show with grandiose fireworks can't leave even most sophisticated spectator indifferent. More than 20 tones of pyrotechnic products and equipment will be placed on the running tracks and adjacent territory. More than 10 thousand of pyrotechnic products including display shells, fountains, flashes, mines, comets etc. will be launched over 60 minutes. The city is building a new grandstand with 25,000 seats, expected to be completed March 20. So far there have been heavy bookings, but rooms were still available at the city's 142 guesthouses and 170 hotels.
